Snake and Owl to meet at...
Married!
We got married September 18th, 2021 in Brooklyn!
I made the illustration in honor of the ceremony. Snake is Zainab’s power animal and mine is the owl. The piece is influenced by Persian, West African, American Indigenous, and Japanese cultures.
I vow
“Life wasn’t the same after meeting you because life wasn't life for me before I met you.
Life wasn't life before I met you because I was too removed from life to know what life felt like. Life was just an abstract concept to me. It wasn't the stream of cascading moments strung together by love that it has become since being with you.
Meeting you was taking my first breath. And I have followed you since deep down into the dark depths of my own heart. There you led me to the wellspring of life that I had hidden from myself so long ago.
I would follow you into the abyss of nothingness; I will follow you now into the now, into the eternity of the present moment.
And on this day, I have found and followed you here into joy, into completion, into wholeness.
Today isn't about me, it is about us, but I wanted to honor the transformative effect that you have had on, in, and around my life.

I vow to be the wind fanning your burning flames.
I vow to echo every song sung in your soul, to sing it again and again and again until I lose my voice.
I vow to give myself the space for self-reflection and self-compassion when I am less than myself, for it is the shame of an overzealous ego that builds walls between us.
I vow to take the trash out immediately when you ask me to take it out on my own time, and I vow to be the resting place for every single one of your tired toes. I vow to admit when I'm wrong, and I vow to very humbly admit when I'm right.
I vow to make space within myself for your presence. And I vow to be present and humble when you tell me that that space is not enough. I will gladly make more space for you and will do better at telling you when I am afraid. I vow to find a way through the dark forests of my moods, back to the warmth of your love.
I am so happy in this moment, in this ever present approaching of an unknown eternity, to be crafting, fashioning, and living a life composed of year after year, day after day, second after second, and moment after moment, of loving you.”
